There was a small pervert-gathering near the Octagon - but all non-Hungarians, it seemed, and more police than perverts to keep order. Yeah, Budapest is nice and just normal. Your explanation of how intellectually curious truth seeking inevitably leads to overlap on the Venn diagram with far/alt right people who might use that information for diametrically opposed reasons (my interpretation) was so settling. I felt like I’d clumsily stumbled across you and others like you but that helped me to see more clearly what my intuition has been based on.
A hard lesson I’m learning rather late in the day is that my innate, fundamental need for truth, sometimes at my own expense, is not shared by anything like as many others as I thought. That has been particularly difficult to reconcile in close friendships but also in groups of intellectuals, highly educated and highly credentialled people I’ve known.
