“Land of hope and glory . . . Something, something else . . . Land of hope and glory, That is where I live.” So began an episode of the sitcom “Bottom” broadcast on 14th October 1991. The character, the ever-pompous Richie, could not remember the line “Mother of the free.” In the intervening years, it is a line that has not so much been forgotten in Britain as ruthlessly ignored to the extent that it is now plain wrong.
