Imagine that you are in a relationship with a woman and she lies to you all the time. She lies about her childhood. She concocts terrible things that happened to her in order to elicit your sympathy and turbo-charge bonding with her. And if you raise this problem, no matter how carefully, she will manipulate you with consummate skill: you have betrayed her by questioning her absolute truthfulness or by asking people she knows about her in order to try to establish what’s going on, the manner in which you have looked into her is unreasonable,and your lack of faith in her must be a reflection of your own psychological problems.
