The people of Liverpool were as friendly and genuine as I’d been informed, but as I dug beneath the surface I began to realise I was dealing with a city-wide omerta. They had cutting criticisms of the place off-camera, but they daren’t do anything other than praise it when on the record. Eventually, as I drank in the hypnotic pageantry of Anfield, I asked myself: “Had I stumbled into Britain’s North Korea?”
